Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, a staff member of the VIP wing of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, who was killed by suspected one-chance robbers, had just been recognised as the Best Nurse for 2025 at FMC Abuja.

This was disclosed by her colleague, Okoh Chidimma Nwabufoe, in a moving tribute she paid to the deceased on Thread.

It would be recalled that Nurse Chuwumeziem met her untimely death on Friday, January 3, 2026, shortly after she completed her afternoon duty and was returning home.

She was said to have boarded a commercial vehicle, unaware it was operated by criminals notorious for attacking unsuspecting passengers.

Her colleague, Nwabufoe, wrote of her late colleague, “Served humanity till death, yet humans cut short her life. What a world!”

A video of her award as the best at FMC Abuja shows her standing in the midst of colleagues with the popular song, “Stand up for the champion’ was being played.

Her colleagues swirled around her with some lifting her hands in jubilation. Unfortunately, she did not savour the victory for long before her life was cut short.

Other colleagues at FMC Abuja described the late nurse as a dedicated, compassionate, and hardworking professional whose death has left a deep void in the hospital community.

“With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our dear colleague, Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem,” a fellow nurse, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

“She served humanity faithfully until her last day but was cruelly taken from us by heartless criminals. FMC Abuja nurses mourn her deeply.”

Sources disclosed that the nurse never made it home after closing from work. Her lifeless body was reportedly discovered by the roadside the following morning and deposited at the FMC Jabi mortuary.

The killing has once again drawn attention to the persistent threat posed by ‘one chance’ syndicates operating within the Federal Capital Territory, particularly to workers who rely on public transportation.

Healthcare professionals and advocacy groups have expressed outrage and concern over the safety of essential workers. Fellow Nurses Africa called on security agencies and authorities in Abuja to urgently address the growing insecurity, especially along commuter routes frequently used by healthcare workers.

“This tragic loss underscores the urgent need for improved security measures to protect those who risk their lives daily to care for others,” the group stated.

As investigations continue, colleagues, friends, and family members have continued to pay tribute to Nurse Chinemerem, remembering her as a selfless caregiver whose life was cut short in the line of duty.
