The embattled founder of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Pastor Chris Okafor, on Tuesday reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos, for questioning following allegations of sexual impropriety and related offences.
Okafor’s appearance came a day after he failed to honour an earlier police invitation, an action that reportedly drew warnings from highly placed individuals who cautioned him against disregarding a lawful summons.
Sources said the intervention prompted the cleric to present himself to investigators.
His initial refusal to appear before the SCID was said to be linked to an ongoing investigation at the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2 Command, Onikan, involving a dispute between him and his estranged lover, Nollywood actress Doris Ogala.
Okafor was reportedly of the view that the existence of a case at the zonal command absolved him from responding to invitations from other police formations.
According to a senior police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Okafor was questioned, and his statement was taken, but he was not detained.
“There is currently no complainant before the Lagos State Police Command. We reached out to alleged victims and even offered protection and logistics support, but no one came forward,” the officer said.
The source added that because an investigation involving a complainant and a suspect is already ongoing at Zone 2 Command, the Lagos State Police Command has decided to stand down to allow that probe to be concluded.
“However, our invitation to potential victims remains open. The case has not been dismissed,” the officer stressed.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, acknowledged that the pastor was at the SCID on Tuesday afternoon but declined to provide further details.
Okafor was initially invited in a letter dated January 3, directing him to report for interrogation on or before 10 a.m. on Monday, an invitation he ignored.
The controversy surrounding the cleric followed a wave of allegations from multiple women, including former partners and church members, prompting the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, to order a formal investigation.
Public outrage intensified after Doris Ogala accused Okafor of reneging on a marriage promise, allegations she supported with audio-visual materials shared online.
Although the pastor initially dismissed the claims, he later admitted to certain misconduct, publicly apologised to his congregation, and stepped aside from pastoral duties after marrying his new wife, Pearl, in December.
