The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Nigerian, John Temitope Onetufo, in Lewisham, London.

The attack took place on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025. Police were alerted at approximately 12:35 p.m., prompting a swift response from emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

On arrival, first responders found Onetufo with stab wounds to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man were arrested on January 2 in connection with the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who is overseeing the investigation, appealed to the public for any information that could assist in clarifying the circumstances surrounding the killing.

“My team has pursued every lead over recent days, and two arrests have been made in connection with this tragic event,” Townsend said. “While this is an important development, our investigation is ongoing. We extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends and remain committed to ensuring justice is served.”

The stabbing has reignited concerns over knife-related crimes in the UK, which have repeatedly claimed lives, including those of Nigerians residing in the country.

In August 2025, 60-year-old Nigerian Nkiru Chima was discovered dead in her Romford apartment with multiple stab wounds.

The news of Onetufo’s death has led to calls for enhanced security measures as investigations continue.

Another recent tragedy outside London’s capital involved Uche Okirie, a Nigerian student stabbed to death by his neighbour in Norfolk, with police charging the suspect in connection with the killing.

These incidents have sparked heightened concern among residents and Nigerians abroad, with calls for stronger community safety measures and focused law enforcement responses to curb violent crime.
