A young man identified as Igwe Akuma has been killed during a violent clash in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, just days before his planned wedding.

Akuma, a native of the Ndi Uma compound, was reportedly attacked and killed on Friday, January 2, amid unrest that later spread across parts of the community. Following the incident, several houses, vehicles and other properties were set on fire by youths involved in the crisis.

The killing and subsequent destruction drew strong condemnation from the traditional leadership in Ohafia. In a statement released on Saturday, January 3, the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, alongside the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, denounced the violence and described the death of the young man as deeply troubling.

According to the statement, Akuma was preparing to get married within days before his life was cut short. The traditional council stressed that there could be no excuse for the killing of an Ohafia indigene under any circumstances, regardless of provocation. It added that acts of violence and arson were unacceptable and an unfortunate way to begin the new year.

The council also appealed for restraint among residents, particularly members of the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, urging them to avoid further confrontation. It disclosed that efforts were ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to ensure the situation does not escalate.

Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Ohafia Division was said to have led a team of officers to the area, resulting in the arrest of some suspects. Those apprehended are currently being questioned as investigations continue into the killing and the destruction of property.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident.
