Former Nigerian senator, Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has passed away at the age of 52 after battling a prolonged illness.

Family sources confirmed that Akwashiki died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves across Nasarawa State, particularly within his constituency, where he was widely regarded as a committed public servant.

Describing his passing as a major loss, a family member said Akwashiki’s death has left a significant void due to his long-standing dedication to grassroots development and empowerment initiatives across Nasarawa North.

According to the source, Akwashiki’s tenure in the National Assembly stood out for its impact, noting that projects linked to his office could be found across several communities in the senatorial district.

He was also credited with making history as the only senator from Nasarawa North to secure a second term in office.

Before his election to the Senate in 2019, Akwashiki had an extensive political career at the state level.

He previously served as the Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, positions that helped shape his legislative experience and influence.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was known among supporters for his hands-on leadership style and strong connection to his constituents.

Tributes are expected to continue pouring in from political leaders, associates, and residents of Nasarawa State as the nation mourns his untimely passing.

His death follows a string of recent high-profile losses within Nigeria’s political class.

In July 2024, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South, died in a London hospital while undergoing medical care, prompting national tributes.

More recently, Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North died in Lagos last November after a brief illness.
