Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election, has formally parted ways with the Labour Party and pitched his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at a political meeting held at the Nike Lake Resort, where Obi addressed party leaders, supporters, and opposition figures drawn from across the country.

Speaking at the event, Obi said his decision to defect was not driven by personal ambition but by what he described as a pressing national responsibility to build a united opposition capable of confronting Nigeria’s worsening economic and democratic challenges.

According to him, the ADC offers a platform for a broader coalition committed to tackling poverty, restoring unity, and strengthening democratic institutions.

Obi used the occasion to call on members of the Obidient Movement, his long-time political allies, and other opposition stakeholders to rally behind the ADC as a common front ahead of future political contests.

“This decision is guided solely by patriotism and national interest,” he said. “I respectfully invite my political associates, members of the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders nationwide to join this broad national coalition under the African Democratic Congress. History will not forgive silence in moments of national peril.”

The move marks a significant development in Obi’s political journey following internal crises and leadership disputes that have continued to trail the Labour Party since the 2023 elections.

Political analysts say Obi’s defection could reshape opposition dynamics and accelerate talks around a united front ahead of upcoming elections, as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve.

In April, rumours were rife that Obi was leaving LP. But the former governor used the occasion of the National Executive Council meeting of the party in Abuja to dismiss the rumour at the time.

Obi said he had not entered into any discussions with any individual or group regarding his departure from the Labour Party.

He announced that any move to leave the party would be discussed with stakeholders first.
