The authorities have announced that the driver of the vehicle that crashed into a stationary vehicle while conveying former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua to Sagamu, has now been discharged from the hospital and could face prosecution for reckless driving.

The driver was released after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, where two members of Joshua’s team lost their lives.

Sources confirmed that the driver has since given a formal statement to security agencies as investigations into the incident continue.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the driver has been cooperating with investigators and may be charged once inquiries are concluded.

“He has been discharged and is currently assisting with investigations. The possibility of prosecution remains, depending on the outcome,” the police spokesperson stated.

Meanwhile, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) disclosed that the driver of the stationary truck involved in the collision fled the scene immediately after the crash and has now been declared wanted.

Preliminary findings by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicate that excessive speed played a major role in the incident.

According to the agency, the SUV conveying Joshua suffered a tyre burst while travelling at high speed, leading to loss of control before slamming into the parked truck at the Sagamu axis of the expressway.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi explained that investigations revealed the burst occurred on the front passenger-side tyre, triggering the fatal collision.

Anthony Joshua, 36, was rushed to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where he is currently receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Tragically, two of his associates — identified as strength and conditioning coach Sina Evovle and personal trainer Latif Ayodele, popularly known as “Latz” — died at the scene.

Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed the deaths in a statement, describing the loss as devastating.

Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn also paid tribute, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the families of the deceased.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing, as authorities work to determine individual liabilities and prevent similar incidents in the future.
