Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has said she has no intention of remarrying following the death of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that one marriage was sufficient for her lifetime.

According to The Punch, Aisha Buhari made the revelation in a newly released 600-page biography titled “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari.” The book was authored by Dr. Charles Omole, Director-General of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research.

The biography was unveiled at the State House, Abuja, on Monday, December 15, 2025, and offers an intimate account of Buhari’s life, from his early years in Daura, Katsina State, to his final days in a London hospital in mid-July 2025.

“She will not remarry,” Dr Omole wrote in the book. “It is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one. She has grandchildren; one husband was enough.”

The author explained that her stance rejects societal expectations that often frame widows as either saints for remaining single or betrayers for choosing to remarry. Instead, the decision was described as a personal and practical choice about the future she envisions for herself.

Looking ahead, the former First Lady is said to be planning a quieter public life, dividing her time between family, philanthropy, and travel. According to the book, she hopes to be more present in the lives of her grandchildren, allowing them to remember her as an active part of their childhood rather than a distant public figure.

Aisha Buhari also plans to continue running the Aisha Buhari Foundation and overseeing a cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has reportedly completed over 200 medical procedures.

Dr. Omole described her decision as a “personal reset” after years under political scrutiny, noting that while politics demanded constant visibility, she now prefers a life of measured engagement and healing.

“For Aisha Buhari, marriage was both a refuge and a trial,” the book noted, adding that it gave her a platform to express her views while also exposing her to public criticism.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari and Aisha Buhari (née Halilu) married on December 2, 1989, following Buhari’s divorce in 1988. They were married for 35 years and had five children together. Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
