What was meant to be a joyful wedding reception for a Nigerian couple reportedly descended into tension and embarrassment after a disagreement between the newlyweds played out in full view of guests.
According to human rights lawyer Oloye TD, who exposed the issue on X (Twitter), the incident occurred during the celebratory dance session when a young man from the couple’s neighbourhood arrived at the venue.
Witnesses said the bride immediately stood up to warmly embrace the guest, an action that visibly unsettled the groom.
The situation reportedly escalated because the groom had previously expressed discomfort with the bride’s association with the man. After presenting the bride with a wedding gift, the guest left the reception.
Shortly afterwards, the groom confronted his wife, questioning who had invited the man and instructing her not to accept or take the gift into their home.
His reaction angered the bride, who responded loudly, insisting that marriage did not strip her of personal freedom.
“I am your wife, not your slave. You cannot control who I associate with,” she was heard saying.
Tempers flared further when the groom allegedly slapped the bride, prompting her to retaliate by first striking him on the chest and then slapping him too.
Family members reportedly converged on them to settle the disagreement before others could notice what was going on.
Although the groom later appeared to calm down, eyewitnesses said he slipped out of the reception before it was over.
The public altercation has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many questioning how the couple would manage their marriage following such an incident on their wedding day.
Online reactions have been mixed, with some users blaming both parties for allowing the disagreement to spiral, while others emphasised the need for communication and counselling before marriage.
One user wrote that both parties were at fault and should have handled the situation privately, while another suggested that professional counselling could have helped identify unresolved issues before the wedding.
