Bolaji Basia, a close ally of Fuji music icon King Wasiu Ayinde Anifowoshe Marshal, popularly known as K1, has criticised the decision reportedly taken by members of the Fusengbuwa ruling family concerning K1’s bid for the Awujale of Ijebuland stool.

It would be recalled that the Fusengbuwa family reportedly disqualified Wasiu Ayinde (K1) from the Awujale succession process without granting him a formal opportunity to publicly defend or present his lineage claim.

Bolaji Basia, reacting to the development in a social media post, described the situation as unfair and suggested that the process adopted by those involved in the screening was flawed.

According to Basia, K1 did not hide his interest in becoming the next Awujale of Ijebuland when the succession process began, even though his declaration came later than others.

He stated that the Fuji legend was subsequently asked to submit details of his lineage in writing, similar to a questionnaire.

Basia argued that, given K1’s status and the sensitivity of the traditional institution, a more transparent and comprehensive screening process should have been adopted.

“If you want to screen someone of his status, you need to do it properly by inviting him and his lineage to come and defend themselves,” he wrote, adding that such a process could even be documented publicly to ensure transparency.

He questioned the fairness of a situation where, according to him, decisions were allegedly taken behind closed doors, with a few individuals reportedly relying on testimonies from some women who claimed they were unfamiliar with K1 or the lineage he presented.

Basia further noted that even if K1 were eventually recognised as a member of the Fusengbuwa family, that alone would not automatically make him the family’s nominee for the Awujale stool.

“Acceptance into the family does not mean he must become the Awujale. He may still not be the family’s choice,” he stated.

However, he insisted that fairness demands that anyone who claims eligibility should be allowed to present evidence and defend their lineage properly.

Describing Fusengbuwa as a large and widely spread family with members across different parts of the world, Basia said it would be unrealistic to expect a small group of people to know every member of the lineage.

He concluded that disqualifying K1 without granting him a full opportunity to defend his claim was unjust, adding that the matter may now be headed to court as the Fuji icon seeks redress.

As of the time of filing this report, representatives of the Fusengbuwa family have not publicly responded to Basia’s claims.
