Veteran Hollywood actor Peter Greene, best known for his roles in Pulp Fiction and The Mask, has been found dead in his New York City apartment. He was 60 years old.
Greene’s body was discovered inside his residence in Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Friday afternoon, December 12, following a welfare check.
According to police, officers arrived at the apartment at about 3:25 p.m. and found the actor unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A neighbour told local media that Greene was found lying face down on the floor, with visible facial injuries and blood at the scene.
Investigators also discovered a handwritten note inside the apartment, reportedly bearing the message, “I’m still a Westie,” a phrase believed to reference the Irish-American gang that once operated out of Hell’s Kitchen.
Authorities have not disclosed the full context or significance of the note.
Despite the circumstances surrounding the discovery, police have said there are no immediate signs of foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled to formally determine Greene’s cause of death.
His longtime manager, Gregg Edwards, confirmed the actor’s death and said music had reportedly been playing inside the apartment for more than 24 hours, prompting concerns that led to the welfare check.
Edwards also revealed that he had spoken with Greene earlier in the week and that the actor had been preparing to return to work.
Greene was set to begin filming an independent thriller titled Mascots in January, alongside actor Mickey Rourke.
He had also been attached to another crime drama, State of Confusion, scheduled for production in late 2026.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Greene endured a difficult early life, running away from home at age 15 and living on the streets of New York.
He later struggled with substance abuse and legal issues, challenges he spoke about openly in interviews.
After seeking treatment in the mid-1990s, he continued acting steadily, amassing nearly 100 film and television credits.
His notable performances included roles in The Usual Suspects, Clean, Shaven, Blue Streak, Training Day, and his acclaimed portrayal of mobster Dorian Tyrell in The Mask.
Peter Greene is survived by his sister. Tributes from colleagues and fans continue to pour in as the film community mourns the loss of a distinctive and talented actor.
