Small aircraft crashes on moving car on busy Florida highway

Plane crash

A woman was injured on Florida’s Interstate 95 on Monday evening when a small aircraft suddenly plunged from the sky and crashed into her moving vehicle during rush-hour traffic.

Dashcam footage captured the terrifying moment the Beechcraft 55 twin-engine aircraft descended rapidly about 5:45 p.m., clipped the rear of a Toyota Camry, and bounced off the vehicle’s roof before skidding to a halt in a shower of sparks.

Several nearby motorists narrowly avoided colliding with the wreckage.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 57-year-old woman driving the Camry was taken to a nearby hospital and miraculously sustained only minor injuries.

The 27-year-old pilot from Orlando and his 27-year-old passenger from Temple Terrace escaped unhurt and remained at the scene as authorities began preliminary investigations.

The pilot reportedly told investigators the aircraft suffered engine trouble moments before the crash, forcing a desperate emergency landing attempt on the busy highway.

Eyewitness Jim Coffey, who recorded part of the crash on his dashcam, described the chaotic moment:

“We just saw this plane drop out of the sky. I thought it might veer off and avoid the car, but bam — the wheel smacked right on the back of the car,” he said. Coffey added that the plane missed his vehicle by mere seconds. His son, Peter, said the aircraft “narrowly avoided multiple cars before impact.”

Images from the scene showed the Camry severely damaged and the aircraft with its nose destroyed, and one wheel torn off during the collision.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has opened an investigation into the technical issues that may have caused the emergency landing. The Florida Highway Patrol is also conducting a full crash analysis.

The incident occurred just hours after a separate small-aircraft emergency landing near DeLand High School, where another plane skidded to a stop at the intersection of Plymouth Avenue and Jacobs Road.

That earlier crash left two occupants injured, one airlifted to the hospital and the other transported by ambulance.

Photos from that scene showed debris, skid marks, and the plane resting on its side as officials responded.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two incidents are related or coincidental.
