The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has spoken candidly about past public criticism regarding his marital life, revealing how people mocked him before he eventually married his wives.
The monarch shared the story during the launch of Ojaja University in Osun State, an event that also formed part of activities marking his 10th coronation anniversary.
Ooni recalls pressure to marry
Speaking at the ceremony, the Ooni said many people questioned why he remained single at a time when they believed he should have already chosen a queen.
“Some people used to make fun of me, saying, ‘Kabiyesi, why are you single? What is your problem? Go and look for a queen,” he said.
He revealed that when he finally married, he still faced scrutiny because he was often seen with his first wife.
The monarch noted that despite the public attention, his first marriage did not last.
“Eventually, I got another queen by force, by fire. Then they said, ‘You are always going around with this queen.’ “
The queen left me. To the glory of God, God blessed me with seven more. Did I not try?”
His humorous remark drew laughter and applause from the audience, including three of his wives—Olori Folasade, Olori Ronde and Olori Temitope—who were present at the event.
Reflecting on past marriage to Queen Naomi
Ooni Ogunwusi also referenced his 2018 marriage to Queen Silekunola Naomi, a union widely discussed at the time due to the blend of Yoruba royalty and Christian ministry.
The marriage ended in 2021 after Queen Naomi publicly announced their separation, a development that further intensified public conversation around the monarch’s personal life.
A decade on the throne and a growing royal household
The Ooni’s comments highlight the journey he has made in navigating public expectations, marital challenges and royal responsibilities during his 10 years on the throne.
With the inauguration of Ojaja University and the support of his wives at the event, the monarch celebrated both his reign and his expanding royal family.
