The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, stood up to caution Governor Ademola Adeleke at the podium today during his address when he continued to render songs instead of reading his speech.
According to several eyewitness accounts and a circulated video clip, the incident occurred as Governor Adeleke broke into song and dance, prompting the First Lady — apparently displeased because of pressure on time— to intervene.
The event in question was the 10th coronation anniversary celebration of the Ooni of Ife in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
As the host governor, Adeleke finished one song and delved into another one, the First Lady rose from her seat and walked up to the governor to tell him to stick to his speech.
Some bystanders described the interruption as “a mild drama” as Adeleke stopped mid-song and listened to what the First-Lady had to say.
She held up five fingers, which observers interpreted to mean that she was giving the governor five minutes to wrap up his speech.
The governor resumed his song from where he stopped to conclude it, but the First Lady returned and threatened to cut off his microphone if he did not stick to his address.
Reactions greet Oluremi Tinubu’s action
Many Nigerians on social media have voiced surprise at the First Lady’s public correction of a sitting governor, describing it as unusual — especially in a high-profile cultural event.
Supporters of Governor Adeleke argue that singing and dancing have long been part of his public persona and question whether the First Lady’s intervention was politically motivated or simply a matter of decorum.
Some netizens argued that it was a happy banter between the First Lady and Ademola Adeleke based on the cordial relationship between them.
Neither of the two political figures has commented on the incident at the time of filing this report.
