A collision involving a tanker and a heavy-duty truck on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has caused heavy traffic on Monday morning, affecting thousands of commuters heading towards the island.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced the incident in a video and statement released early Monday.

According to the agency, the crash occurred overnight near the University of Lagos waterfront, but its impact extended into the morning rush hour.

LASTMA reported that the accident happened about 6:58 a.m., noting that motorists exiting the Tollgate axis toward Iyana-Oworo were experiencing slow movement due to the obstruction.

The traffic gridlock also spread to Alapere inward Lagos Island, the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway, and parts of Ikorodu Road, as drivers diverted to alternative routes to avoid the scene.

In its statement, LASTMA said, “Traffic is moving slowly exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana-Oworo due to an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge near the UNILAG waterfront. A tanker and a truck collided overnight, causing significant disruptions. Our officers and the Nigerian Police Force are on the ground, monitoring traffic and ensuring safety. Cones have been placed behind the vehicles to prevent further accidents.”

The agency added that efforts were ongoing to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow as soon as possible.

Motorists were advised to drive cautiously, expect delays, and plan their movements accordingly. LASTMA assured the public that updates would be provided as the situation develops.
