A video that has gone viral on social media shows a landlord in Imo State, Nigeria, packing out the belongings of a tenant named Tochukwu, who has been missing for months.

The clip, shared by @ChuksEricE on X (formerly Twitter), shows neighbours explaining that Tochukwu travelled to his village, Orlu in Imo State about a year ago and has failed to return.

The landlord and neighbours were later told the man was kidnapped and a huge ransom was demanded by his abductors.

The neighbour who filmed the scene speculated that the family was probably not able to meet the demand of the bandits who kidnapped Tochukwu because he was never released to date.

He expressed fears that the tenant might have been killed in captivity.

The landlord was said to be sympathetic at first, granting an extension of time when rent fell due in the hope that the tenant would return or his family members would pay for him.

However, the landlord reportedly approached the court for a formal eviction of Tochukwu, and it was granted after some more extensions.

Footage shows the tenant’s belongings neatly arranged outside the compound.

The neighbour who filmed the scene said the lawyers and the court bailiffs were still inside the apartment, removing other items.

Personal effects sighted in the video included air conditioning units, both indoor and outdoor units, refrigerators, microwave, freezers, tables and the rest.

The incident has elicited mixed reactions on social media. Some users supported the action of the landlord, arguing that he reserved the right to preserve his apartment and derive maximum pecuniary benefits from it.

Others criticised the decision as insensitive, particularly since the tenant’s whereabouts remain unknown.

A viewer commented, “This is heartbreaking. What if the person returns?” Another wrote, “Landlords no dey send anybody again. Economy don hard.”
