Gunmen shot a policeman and a passerby to death in the Ilese area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, over the weekend in an incident residents believe was cult-related.
Violence suddenly erupted on the evening of Saturday, November 29, 2025, when cultists believed to be on a reprisal attack stormed the community, gun ablazing, according to an eye-witness interviewed by the Punch.
The policeman and the passerby were hit by some of the bullets sprayed by the rampaging gunmen.
Residents said the clash was between members of the Aiye and the Eiye confraternities. The cause of the confrontation is not known.
The slain policeman, identified as Olamilekan, was attached to the Obalende Police Division, Ijebu-Ode. The second victim is yet to be identified.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident to The Punch, adding that he was yet to be fully briefed on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
