A Nigerian man, Uchenna “Uche” Okirie, living in the United Kingdom, has been stabbed to death inside a student accommodation.
Okirie, in his 30s, is believed to be studying at the University of East Anglia. He was a British Red Cross volunteer.
Information indicated that he was either a current or former postgraduate student at UEA’s School of International Development.
Last year, Okirie made headlines when he published a paper under the university’s name on the impact of climate change on health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
When contacted, the university said its initial checks did not locate his record. They, however, confirmed that a small number of their students live in the accommodation.
Reports indicated that the tragedy occurred around 5 am on Saturday at Somerleyton House in Norwich
Police arrived at the location to find Uche with a stab wound to the chest. They were unable to resuscitate him. He died from his injuries at the scene.
Police have arrested a co-tenant, a 27-year-old Congolese national called Benjamin Katabana. He is being prepared for an arraignment before Norwich Magistrates’ Court.
Residents disclosed that they were roused from sleep by a fire alarm early in the morning.
Neighbours said they saw people standing outside in their pyjamas and later saw multiple police cars and an ambulance, signifying that something was seriously amiss.
