A Nigerian man, Chiemka Okoronta, is to spend the next 10 years in a British jail after being convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl in Bradford, United Kingdom.
The incident that landed Okoronta in trouble happened on 25 March this year when he boarded the same bus with the girl.
The night bus service unexpectedly terminated in Morley, Leeds, leaving the two with no other choice but to make another transport arrangement home to Bradford.
The victim’s situation was a little more precarious because her phone had run out of battery by then.
Okoronta reportedly convinced the teenager to share a taxi with him to Bradford Interchange, where each could find their way to their apartments.
The convict, however, told the taxi man to take them to his apartment. He thereafter lured the teenager into his accommodation.
Once inside, Okoronta, who relocated from Nigeria via the study route, locked up the girl in his toilet where he raped her.
Not satisfied, Okoronta reportedly repeated the crime many times in the course of the night.
The victim was able to get help when she beckoned to a passerby through the window and begged for the use of the person’s phone to call 999.
Shortly after, police visited Okoronta’s apartment, where they freed the victim and arrested Okoronta.
The teenager, in a victim impact statement read out in court, said the event of March 25 turned her life upside down.
She said she continued to have flashbacks of what happened to her in her waking moments, in addition to nightmares.
Okoronta was convicted of multiple rape offences in July and given 10 years’ imprisonment yesterday, November 3, 2025.
The court told him he faces deportation upon the completion of his sentence.
The court also imposed three additional years of supervision (extended licence) by probation officers. Under British law, if he breaches any of the conditions imposed on him during the period, he could be sent back to prison.
Okoronta is also to be registered as a s*x offender for the rest of his life.
Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as a dangerous s3xual predator.
