The Rivers State government has intervened after the hospital where a woman, Mrs Chiamaka, 36, died while delivering her baby allegedly detained the baby and his grandmother for one year over unpaid medical bills.

The plight of the baby and his maternal grandmother came to light after a Nigerian man, Emeka Amaefula, posted about them on social media.

Amaefula had taken to Facebook post a letter signed by one Dr Tari Bozimo, crying for help for the family of the baby boy,

The doctor claimed in the letter that the baby’s mum was rushed to the Meridian Hospital after experiencing premature labour.

Chiamaka was delivered of her baby at the hospital, but she reportedly bled to death.

The letter explained that the hospital placed the child in an incubator to preserve his life and also administered necessary drugs and other treatment.

At the end of the treatment, the hospital reportedly asked the bereaved family to pay a bill of N6 million.

The family was only able to pay N1.4 million, leaving a balance of N4.6million. As a result of this, the hospital reportedly detained the child and the grandmother who is caring for him for a year now.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, has now waded in after seeing the Amaefula’s post.

She responded that the hospital in question had been contacted and that updates would be given in due time.
