Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has named his nephew, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports in Osun State, Kola Adewusi, made the announcement during a courtesy visit by to his office by members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter.
Adewusi said the move was aimed at repositioning sports in Osun and building a sustainable funding model through partnerships between the private and public sectors.
He also revealed the state’s plan to set up a Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body for sports development, administration, and policy implementation.
Adewusi explained that the Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state.
The Deputy Governor said Davido accepted the appointment without any reservation and vowed to contribute to the state’s sporting growth.
The senior government official expressed belief that Davido’s global recognition and network would bring visibility and attract substantial funding to the state’s sports ecosystem.
Adewusi also seized the opportunity to reaffirm the government’s dedication to completing the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium.
He assured that the facility would meet Olympic standards once finished.
Davido’s appointment has rekindled complaints in some quarters about Governor Adeleke’s penchant for appointing family members to key positions.
The governor had in 2023 appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of former Governor Isiaka Adeleke, as Chairman of the Board of Local Government.
