ASUU calls off two-week strike

ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its ongoing two-week warning strike.

This was announced today, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, by the president of the union, Chris Piwuna.

At a press conference in Abuja, Piwuna directed members to resume work starting tomorrow, Thursday.

He said the decision followed “fruitful engagements” with government representatives during negotiations held last week.

The union subsequently held an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja between October 21 and 22 and resolved to halt the strike.

The union leader stated that the government, however, had a month to fulfil its commitments, or the strike would resume.

Piwuna said the consensus at the NEC meeting was that the government should be given a one-month window to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement. The government is also expected to address all other outstanding issues within the time frame.
