A soldier, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi and his wife have been found dead in their apartment, leading to the institution of a probe.
The probe was announced by the Nigerian Army 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Kwara State.
However, the incident happened in the official apartment of the late soldier and his wife in the Wawa Cantonment, Niger State.
The acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, confirmed that the tragic event happened on Saturday.
Sources told The Punch that Corporal Akenleye Femi was calm and dedicated to duty, but had been acting out of character in recent weeks.
Colleagues of the victims claimed they saw them the previous day, and they appeared to be hale and hearty.
Nwankwo said preliminary investigations showed that Lance Corporal Femi, who was serving with the 221 Battalion, had been on duty within the barracks before excusing himself from his superior officers to attend to a personal matter.
He said the lifeless bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the cantonment.
Nwankwo said the investigation was ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the demise of the couple.
In the interim, the bodies of the couple have been deposited at a morgue for preservation and necessary tests.
Nwankwo expressed sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased couple.
“The Army deeply regrets this sad incident and prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwamkwo said in his statement.
He also assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made public and necessary measures would be put in place to prevent recurrence.
It would be recalled that another tragic incident happened in a barrack in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when a serving officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, was severely burnt in his apartment.
He was rushed to a couple of hospitals where they tried to stabilise him before transferring him to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
His wife has since absolved herself from blame in the incident.
