University lecturers begin two-week strike today

ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the commencement of a two-week warning strike, effective Monday, 13 October 2025.

This announcement was made by the National President of the union, Professor Chris Piwuna, on Sunday, following the expiration of the ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, had on Wednesday disclosed in Abuja that the government had entered the final stage of discussion with ASUU and other unions over welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

The minister disclosed that the current administration had made significant progress with the release of N50bn for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

He added that another N150bn had been captured in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.

However, this apparently fell short of the expectations of the union as its president declared that there was nothing on the ground to stop the planned two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025.

He then directed all the branches of ASUU to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025.

“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Prof Piwuna declared.

The Federal Government had made a move to avert the strike action by inviting the union leadership for a talk last Friday.

The government made an offer to the union, but it was rejected by the union leadership because it did not meet the demands presented by the union.

ASUU’s original demands include the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, sustainable funding of public universities, release of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries, revitalisation of public universities and cessation of the victimisation of lecturers in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Lagos State University, and Kogi State University, now Prince Abubakar Audu University.

The demands also include payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears and promotion arrears for over four years and release of withheld third-party deductions (cooperative contributions, union check-off dues).
