One of Nigeria’s foremost evangelists and the spiritual leader of Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has passed away peacefully.
The news was broken by his family in a formal statement released on Monday. The revered cleric, according to his family, died on 6 October 2025 at the age of 80.
The family called his demise a “glorious transition” from a life of devoted service to eternal rest.
Ukpai bestrode the Nigerian Christian scene like a colossus for six decades, establishing himself as a spiritual general and founding father of faith.
He was renowned for pragmatic evangelism, dynamic and impactful teaching of the Word, and prophetic demonstrations of God’s power.
The Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association shaped the lives of millions of people in Nigeria and around the world.
His family described him as a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity.
The statement added that Rev. Ukpai’s teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship would continue to inspire believers for years to come.
The late cleric also made an indelible mark as a loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to countless individuals across the world.
The late cleric’s family expressed gratitude for the life and work of Ukpai, adding that they mourn his physical absence but rejoice that he completed his race and is now resting in eternal praise.
The family said details of his funeral would be announced as soon as possible.
Prophet Joel Ogebe had earlier given a hint of the news, but he did not mention any name.
He had posted a cryptic message on X: “A giant has gone to be with the Lord. My father, my father, the chariot of Israel. Heaven rejoices. Uyo.”
A Christian platform, Church Gist, followed up with a message on their Facebook channel, unmasking the departed giant.
Other Nigerians have since been paying tributes to the late evangelist.
May his soul rest in peace.
