Former Catholic sister, Annastasia Kinse, has accused her former superior at Veritas University, Abuja, Nigeria, of trying to sleep with her.
Kinse alleged that Veritas University and the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters dismissed her after she reported a sexual harassment case involving her head of department.
The dismissed Nun said she only attempted to seek justice but was greeted with silence and intimidation.
Kinse said the Church authorities and the university sided with her persecutor and heaped the blame on her.
She said the incident had shattered her faith in human institutions but not in God, adding that they could only take her title but not her voice.
Kinse vowed to continue to speak out against abuse in the Church, insisting she would not be silenced with lies.
She denied the allegations contained in her dismissal letter that she converted to Islam and abandoned her vows.
The ex-nun said a Facebook post she made in frustration was misinterpreted and used against her to justify her expulsion.
Kinse said her complaints were ignored, adding that the priest sent to “counsel” her was one of those she had accused of harassment.
“He came not to help, but to revenge because I refused his advances,” she alleged.
The ex-Nun said her belongings were thrown out of her residence, describing the experience as cruel.
“But I still believe in God’s justice,” she said.
Church refutes Anastasia Kinse’s allegations
The leadership of the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help has dismissed the claims made by Kinse.
The congregation denied the allegations of mistreatment and harassment, insisting that Kinse’s dismissal followed “acts of gross misconduct” and “persistent rejection of fraternal correction.”
A statement signed by the Superior General, Sr Maryanne Ogwokhademhe, and Secretary-General, Sr Rosemary Odion, said Kinse ceased to be a member after she abandoned the Catholic faith for Islam.
