The wife of the late Lieutenant Samson Haruna has spoken up, following a widely circulated report that she set her husband ablaze, killing him in Akwa Ibom.

Recall that news broke yesterday that Mrs Samson Haruna had an altercation with her husband as a result of which she allegedly set him on fire, ultimately killing him.

Defending herself in an audio recording now being circulated by her family, the suspect claimed that she was the victim of domestic violence in the marriage.

Mrs Haruna, who married her husband in a massive white wedding only in April, said her husband relocated from their shared room to the store.

According to her, he was acting on his elder brother’s advice that he should frustrate her by not sleeping in the same room with her.

She claimed that the storeroom contained a keg of fuel and other items. The embattled wife said while her husband was packing into the store, he accidentally overturned the keg containing fuel.

According to her, the fuel was poured into the house, but her husband was not concerned about it, but was instead threatening to burn her.

Mrs Haruna claimed her husband threatened to set her ablaze if her parents did not come to take her away.

She claimed she called the Commanding Officer of their barracks three times to report the threat.

The wife, who is a nurse by profession, said that after the incident happened, the investigation team raised by the army was able to confirm that he called the Commanding Officer.

She further alleged that she was put in the guardroom for 13 days despite the fact that she did not do anything to her husband.

Mrs Haruna said even her husband knew she did not do anything to him. She alleged that it was her brothers-in-law who were making all the trouble and engineering the bad reports against her.

See excerpts from the audio below:

“On the 22nd September, he came and dropped me off from work. His elder brother asked him to pack his stuff from the room, and frustrate me, that when I’m frustrated, I would leave the room.

So he bought a new mattress and packed his stuff into another room, to the store. His store had fuel and other things. So while he was packing, he accidentally hit the fuel, and the fuel poured into the house.

So he has been beating me. He even beat me on so many occasions that I even had a miscarriage. So he was threatening me with a lighter, saying that he was going to set me ablaze if my parents didn’t come to carry me. So, immediately he said he would set me ablaze (Interruptions from a female in the room)— They didn’t allow me. He was begging that I should come and see him. He was even telling them that I should forgive him. I didn’t do anything to him. It was an accident. (She spoke Hausa.) No access to my phone in how many days. (Hausa) Why are they locking his wife? He told them (Hausa).

He said I’m going to set you ablaze. I called the commanding officer, and said this man said he’s going to set us ablaze. I called him three times. The investigation team checked my phone and saw that I truly called C.O. I even threatened him that I was going to put this thing on TikTok. I was even joking and put my phone on and said I’m going to put this thing on TikTok.”
