Some gunmen opened fire on revellers at a fun spot near the Ojo Military Cantonment, Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Lagos, on Saturday night, killing four people.

A teenager who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident was hit by a stray bullet and is currently hospitalised.

According to The Punch, the incident happened at a Snooker spot near Onireke bus-stop, Ojo, around 9 pm on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Witnesses said the men dressed like every other fun seeker walked into the spot and pretended to be looking for where to sit.

One of the witnesses, who identified himself as Akogun, said the men, who were five in number, suddenly brought out guns.

According to him, they started shooting directly at fun-seekers, who sprang to their feet and ran in various directions.

He recounted that the mallam selling noodles beside the snooker spot was the first casualty.

The noodle seller was reportedly hit by the flying bullets, and he died on the spot. Some others hit by the bullets managed to get away from the scene.

A police source later confirmed to the publication that some people came to the police station to report the death of their loved ones shot at the spot.

The source said the total number of lives lost at the spot had risen to four.

Residents of the area hotly debated the mission of the gunmen. Some said they were robbers because they allegedly collected people’s phones and other valuables.

Some others argued that they were cultists, probably out to exert revenge on rivals. They backed up their suspicion by the fact that the assailants chanted some words associated with cultists.

Police identify gunmen as cultists

The Lagos State Police Command, however, believes it was a cult clash. The command in a statement announced the arrest of five men in connection with the incident.

The statement signed by SP Abimbola Adebisi disclosed that the commanders of the tactical squad, as well as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), stormed the crime scene after getting a distress call.

The spokesperson said three victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment, adding that one of them died at the Badagry General Hospital.

Adebisi gave the names of the suspects as  Samuel Success, 29; Victor Christian, 43; Wisdom Chukwuemeka, 28; Balogun Emmanuel, 43; and Oche Job, 39.

She disclosed that the men were picked up during a raid of the entire area by police operatives led by the tactical units of the command.

The police spokesperson said the premises and the operational vehicle of the arrested cultists were thoroughly searched, leading to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons used in cult clashes.

Some of the items recovered were listed as a locally-made pistol, two pump-action guns, 52 live cartridges, two expended cartridges, one Toyota Avalon with registration number KTU 610 JB, an HP laptop, a computer mouse, a car key, a cutlass, a Federal Republic of Nigeria passport bearing the name Ekomafe Gregory Dickson, two Samsung Android phones, two iPhones, an unidentified Android phone, and a small Nokia phone.

She said the items had been properly documented and registered as exhibits for ongoing investigation.

Adebisi said a plan was ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the group. She also disclosed that police patrols and tactical teams had been deployed to the scene to forestall reprisal attacks.
