A 40-foot container-laden truck has fallen on a commercial Nissan Micra car at the Soka area along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan, Oyo State, killing one person.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, on the Ibadan-bound lane of the expressway.

The container, containing bales of clothing, was being carried by a trailer travelling beside the Micra taxi.

A man identified as Yusuf, who claimed to have witnessed the accident, said the accident was caused by the concrete barricades left on the road by contractors after completing repairs in the area.

He recounted that it was raining at the time of the accident. The witness said the trailer driver tried to avoid hitting the concrete barricade and ended up hitting the Micra.

“I think he tried to regain balance, but that was when the truck fell, trapping the driver,” he said.

The witness stated that the road had been finished for a long time, and the barricades ought to have been removed.

The car was reportedly pinned under the tail section of the truck. The rescuers had to use a machete to cut through parts of the vehicle to reach the victim’s lifeless body.

The eyewitness account was corroborated by an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Federal and state government agencies worked together to remove the wreckage from the road.

The General Manager of OYTMA, Adeoye Adekola, told The Punch later that the body of the victim had been retrieved and deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road.

He said the container, fully loaded with clothes, was still there at the time of speaking with the publication.

Adekola blamed impatience, speeding, and the lack of reflectors on the road barriers as major causes of the crash.

He remarked that the trailer driver saw the barrier late and swerved towards a Micra parked to pick up a passenger.

When he realised that, he tried to return his hand, but the momentum tipped the container over, leading to it landing on the Micra.

The driver of the Micra was the only one in his vehicle at the time, and he died instantly.
