A tanker exploded after being involved in an accident in the early hours of this morning on the Abeokuta–Sagamu expressway.

The incident reportedly happened around 1 am on Friday, according to an official of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi.

He disclosed that the petrol-laden 33,000-litre tanker oversped and tipped over, spilling its contents on the highway.

Akinbiyi said the impact of the fall triggered a fire outbreak, which spread to other vehicles and electric poles.

He said the accident happened along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway.

A truck that was parked nearby was caught up in the inferno and was burned down. Similarly, a towing vehicle parked along the road was also destroyed.

Power infrastructure that delivers electricity to MOwe and its environs was also badly affected, leading to a power outage.

Akinbiyi said rescue and emergency services, made up of TRACE, Ogun State and Nestlé PLC Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police, were at the scene of the accident.

He promised that normalcy would be restored to the busy road as soon as possible.
