An illegal immigrant, Carlos Nava, who has been caught and deported 8 times but returned each time, has been accused of raping a total of 17 women.
Nava has again been caught and will now face prosecution for multiple sexual offences. The Mexican national first agreed to a plea bargain, which led to some of his charges being dropped.
However, he suddenly changed his mind, forcing prosecutors to reinstate his other multiple charges.
Nava, 49, will be tried in Las Vegas on accusations of violent sexual assaults spanning nearly two decades.
The Mexican was first caught and deported in 2002, but soon found his way back into the US.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Nava was last deported in 2020. He managed to re-enter the US and continued his criminal acts until he was caught again.
To avoid going to jail for a long time, he agreed on July 30 to an Alford plea to one felony count of s£xual ass@ult with use of a deadly weapon.
8 News Now reported that the plea allows a defendant to acknowledge prosecutors likely have enough evidence for a conviction without admitting guilt.
The plea agreement led to eight other charges being dropped against Nava. However, when he turned around to withdraw the plea on September 25, when he was to be sentenced, the prosecutors reinstated his full charges.
Nevada Globe reported that Clark County Deputy District Attorney Julia Barker told the court Nava was suspected of being involved in 17 assaults.
Of the 17, six victims have been identified. The other 11, including two minors at the time of the crime, are yet to be identified.
Barker said it would be difficult for Nava to dispute that he carried out the assaults when his sperm was “is in places that indicate he probably did.
He further disclosed that operatives from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police found 17 pairs of underwear folded in a backpack linked to the suspect.
The suspect remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Centre pending his court appearance on Oct. 9.
