Zambian Policewoman faces prosecution for sending nude photos to paramilitary WhatsApp group
Zambian authorities have invoked the country’s law against obscenity on a policewoman, Nyarai Kambelembele, who allegedly sent her nude photos to a paramilitary WhatsApp group.
Kambelembele appeared to have intended to send the photos to someone else, but erroneously forwarded them to the WhatsApp group, where they caused a lot of commotion.
Infuriated members of the group filed a formal complaint against the circulation of the obscene pictures on the platform.
Nyarai Kambelembele was arrested and formally arraigned before Lusaka Resident Magistrate Peter Mungala for circulating obscenity.
The policewoman is being prosecuted under the Cybercrimes Act 2 of 2021 of Zambia.
She is accused of possessing obscene pictures or videos that could corrupt morals in the first charge.
The second charge relates to her circulating the obscene pictures and videos in the Paramilitary Jubilee Intake 51/52 WhatsApp group.
Zambian Main reported that Kambelembele appeared in court without legal representation.
No further details are provided on her next appearance in court.
