Former Arsenal point man, Billy Vigar, has passed away at the age of 21 following a “significant brain injury” while playing for Chichester City last weekend.
Vigar was injured during last Saturday’s Isthmian League Premier Division match against Wingate and Finchley.
The game was abandoned as a result of the horrific accident 13 minutes into the game.
Vigar was rushed to the hospital, where he was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday, medical personnel decided he needed an operation to facilitate any chances of recovery.
The operation was said to be successful, and he appeared to be recovering until his condition worsened. He passed away on Thursday morning, September 25, 2025, according to a statement from the late footballer’s family.
The statement expressed how devastated the family was that Vigar died while playing the sport he loved so much.
Chichester City also released a statement expressing their sadness at the passing of the striker.
The club requested that the privacy of the family be respected as they grieve the passing of their son.
Vigar started his career with Arsenal by joining its academy at the age of 14 in 2017. In 2022, he signed a professional contract with the club.
The late footballer was later loaned to Derby and Eastbourne Borough before joining Hastings United in 2024.
At the start of this season, he joined Chichester City.
Arsenal, in a statement, said everyone at the club was deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of “Chichester City forward and former Arsenal academy player, Billy Vigar.”
Arsenal recalled that Vigar joined its academy “on schoolboy terms aged 14, after being scouted at his home town club Hove Rivervale FC.
The club stated that Vigar excelled as a striker at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his debut season.
Arsenal said apart from his talent, Vigar would be remembered for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club.
The club recalled that Vigar once called the day he was spotted by its scouts ‘the most important of his life’.
