UNILAG student drowns while celebrating election as students’ president

A student of the University of Lagos, Damilola Balogun, has drowned while celebrating his election as the president of the Nigerian University Education Students Association (NUESA).

Balogun and his colleagues went to Eleko beach for some fun on Thursday, 18th September 2025. It was reportedly to celebrate the handover of power from the old administration to the new one headed by Balogun.

The formal change of baton had taken place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, with the dean of the faculty and other top lecturers in attendance.

Damilola Balogun was said to be enjoying himself at the beach with his friends when he asked one of them to take a video of him as he did a backflip.

Just about the same time, a massive wave allegedly swept Balogun off his feet and retreated with him.

Frantic efforts to rescue him proved abortive. A search party came out of the water empty-handed.

About 48 hours later, Balogun’s body was seen floating at Eleko beach.

Reports indicated that the late Balogun managed to spend only 24 hours in the position of NUESA when he lost his life.

“This is a huge blow to the whole University community and the prayer is for the lord to accept his soul’ wrote a certain Mercy Micheal, believed to be a UNILAG student on Nairaland.
