Mother, son run over by drunk driver for burial in Akwa Ibom

A popular roadside beans cake (‘akara’) seller, Mrs Justina Udofia and her son, Emedion, are to be buried today, Friday, September 19, in Akwa Ibom State.

Udofia, better known as Mma Akara, was killed alongside Emdion and five other people by a reckless driver at a popular roundabout connecting Ring Road 3 and the Stadium Road at Nung Oku Junction in the capital city of Uyo.

The tragic incident reportedly happened a few weeks ago when a Toyota Corolla car veered off the road, clearing bystanders waiting for commercial vehicles and roadside sellers.

An eyewitness, Imaobong Udoh, who sells pears by the roadside side said the accident claimed the life of Mma Akara instantly.

She said Mma Akara was loved by many for selling akara late into the night at Nung Oku junction.

The pear seller said the incident happened very fast, leaving no room for any of the victims to escape.

A Facebook user, Thompson Thompson, who is believed to be close to the family of Mma Akara, put the burial arrangements on his Facebook wall on Thursday.

He said the driver of the Toyota Corolla was drunk. He lamented that Mma Akara’s loss was devastating to the community, the church and those who knew her.

Thompson also regretted that the incident claimed the life of her young son, Emedion, cutting short his bright future.
