Air Peace pilot of aircraft that overshot runway in PH took alcohol

Air Peace

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that the Air Peace pilot and co-pilot involved in an incident in Port Harcourt in July had alcohol and cannabis in their blood.

Recall that an Air Peace Boeing 737 with 103 passengers on board overshot Runway 21 after an unstabilised final approach on July 13, 2025.

No one was hurt in the incident that caused a scare both on board the flight and on the ground.

The NSIB launched a probe into the incident immediately. In their preliminary report, the bureau said the aircraft touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold, which was well beyond the recommended zone. The aircraft finally came to a stop 209 metres into the clearway.

The body said the result of the toxicological screening carried out on the flight crew at Rivers State Hospital, Port Harcourt, revealed they had alcohol and drugs in their systems.

NSIB said the results were being reviewed under the human performance and safety management components of their probe.

The bureau said it issued safety recommendations for Air Peace to train its staff in the handling of unstabilised approaches and go-around decisions.

It also advised the airline to reinforce internal procedures for crew fitness-for-duty monitoring before flight dispatch.

NSIB reiterated that the captain and the first officer tested positive for Ethyl Glucuronide, indicating recent alcohol consumption.
