Fortune has smiled on Nancy Wilfred, the girl who was assaulted by some students of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, has been ‘adopted’ by the First Lady of the state, Dr Gloria Diri.
This was contained in a press statement issued by Maria Olodi-Osumah, the Press Secretary to the Wife of the Governor, issued today, Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
According to the statement, Dr Diri received Nancy, a native of Mgbele in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, in the Government House, Yenagoa.
The victim was accompanied to the Government House by her sister, an activist, Livinus Nwosu and members of the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT).
The wife of the governor reportedly announced that she would take custody of Nancy and would be responsible for her education up to university level.

Govt to give Nancy Wilfred medical treatment
She announced that Nancy would be admitted to a hospital immediately for a comprehensive medical examination.
“I have also spoken with the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Mr Francis Idu, and he has assured me that the suspects will be apprehended”, she said.
The First Lady said she was sad that Nancy had been living life all by herself for years before the incident.

Dr Diri described the treatment meted out to her as barbaric and unfortunate.
She gave the assurance that Nancy Wilfred would be protected as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, particularly the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act 2021 of Bayelsa State.
It would be recalled that Nancy, 19, suffered cruel brutalisation from her friend named Kadi, who mobilised at least three other ladies to assault her.
They pulled off her trousers and stomped on her private parts. They also used a knife to cut part of her braids during the assault.
