‘Nurse Tolu’ and ‘JusticeforNurseTolu’ have been trending on social media for the past few days after news emerged that a Nigerian man named Tolu was accused of rape by his British ‘wife’ in the United Kingdom (UK).
The story is all over TikTok and X (Twitter), as the African community in the UK tries to rally support for the said nurse who is facing some years in jail if the allegations against him are proven in court.
Reports suggest that his unnamed Caucasian wife is playing the UK legal system to rob him of his house.
Nurse Tolu reportedly relocated to the UK on a study route six years ago, having practised as a nurse in Nigeria.
He reportedly got a two-year post-study visa after completing his Master’s degree in a UK university.
Tolu’s degree reportedly qualified him to practice as a mental health nurse in the UK. However, he reportedly flunked a prerequisite language test, which momentarily stalled his progress.
While he was trying to solidify his stay in the foreign land, he met a white mother of two kids. They reportedly fell in love, and the lady became pregnant. Following the pregnancy, the lady was said to have invited Tolu to live with her.
It was gathered that the dynamics of their union changed once they started living together.
The wife reportedly flew into a rage easily and used racial slurs against Tolu. The situation got worse until the man moved out to preserve his sanity.
Once the lady gave birth, the couple again had another argument over the name that would appear on its birth certificate.
The lady refused to give her child Tolu’s last name. She claimed that the fathers of her other children absconded as soon as their names were put on the certificates.
Nurse Tolu reportedly had to resort to the court to force his lover to put his name on the birth certificate.
Reports further indicated that Tolu eventually passed his test and secured a job with visa sponsorship. He also got a favourable judgment as the court compelled his estranged lover to put his name on the child’s record.
It was learnt that Tolu carried on his life working as a mental health nurse and running Uber services.
He did well enough to acquire a three-bedroom property, from where he continued to call his ex-lover.
It was alleged that the estranged lover reached out to Tolu when she realised fortunes had smiled on him. They reportedly resumed from where they stopped, and she got pregnant with their second baby.
With this development, she allegedly suggested moving in with Tolu so they could raise the children together. He agreed.
However, once they started living together, trouble reared its head again as they often fought over derogatory racial remarks.
When Tolu was getting fed up and was looking for another way of offloading his troublesome partner, she struck.
The partner reportedly called the police to allege that Tolu had sex with her against her will. It was learnt that Tolu was at work when the police showed up to arrest him.
The development has cost the man his job, as his employers put him on suspension pending the resolution of the case.
He was also slapped with a restraining order forbidding him to visit the house he acquired with his money.
The partner is living there with four children, two belonging to Tolu, and the other two to two different men.
The case is adjourned till February 2026. Before then, the Nigerian is not able to work as a nurse or an Uber driver.
Some Nigerians are now trying to raise support for him financially to survive until the case comes up. They are also mobilising to get solid legal representation for him.
The story has thrown up various shades of opinion. Some believe that Tolu will be freed once the court listens to the two sides of the case.
They opined that it would be very clear to the court that the Caucasian partner is gaming the system.
Some others, however, warned that Tolu needed a strong legal representation to guarantee his freedom.
