A man that the people of Etiti in Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra State, believed had relocated abroad has allegedly been found with his hands and legs shackled inside a hut.
The man, identified simply as Chigbo, told community youths, who discovered him in a dingy hut behind his family home, that he had been held incommunicado for five years.
A viral video shows community youths discussing the discovery animatedly among themselves.
They can be heard saying that when anyone inquired about Chigbo, his family always said he had gone to Europe.
Chigbo himself stated in the video that he had been isolated from the public since July 3, 2021.
He did not say what reason was cited for the decision by his family.
However, a woman believed to be a member of his family told the community that Chigbo had mental issues.
She explained that he was chained to prevent him from hurting himself or anyone. The youths, however, compelled her to bring keys to the padlock on the man’s hands and legs.
The keys she provided were tried, but did not open the padlocks. The youths then decided to use a hacksaw to cut open the shackles.
Viewers online are asking why the man was not taken to the hospital instead of locking him away and lying to the public.
It is not clear if the police have been involved.
