A businessman has been jailed in Switzerland after being found guilty of raping a teenage girl who fell asleep during a flight from Mumbai.

The man who was not named was on a business trip to Belgium and sat next to the young woman.

The male passenger, who is married with children, reportedly chatted up the girl during their nine-hour flight.

They interacted briefly before the girl fell asleep. The 44-year-old man then proceeded to undress the teenager and perform sex acts on her and himself.

It is not clear if the girl woke up during the act or afterwards. She reported him to the cabin crew, and he was arrested upon arrival.

The perpetrator confessed to the attack in the Bülach District Court and said it was a mistake.

He further admitted that he did not obtain the consent of the girl before proceeding.

The Swiss National Council of States had recently passed a resolution to affirm the formula ‘no means no.’

With this, rape is now considered to have occurred if the victim tells the man ‘no’ in gestures or words at any point in their interactions.
