Nigerian man narrates how new iPhone bought in Lagos nearly incriminated him in UK

A Nigerian man, Gbenga Wemimo, who is living in the United Kingdom, with his wife, has narrated how they nearly landed in trouble in the UK over her iPhone.

Wemimo, who shared his experience on X, said he bought a new iPhone from an Apple-accredited dealer in Lekki Phase One, Lagos, last September.

He said he believed in supporting the local economy and would typically make some of his purchases from Nigeria.

Wemimo said they later decided to go for a newer edition of the phone and decided to utilise the swap arrangements.

He and his wife then went to an Apple Store at Westfield Stratford City Arcade in London to swap the older model for a new one.

According to him, the process ran into a hitch after the Apple Store staff had scanned in the details of the Nigerian-purchased phone.

He said the staff announced to them that it was a stolen phone.

Wemimo said their saving grace was that they had their receipts intact, showing that they purchased it from an approved Apple Store.

He said the attendant left them and went to consult with her superiors. According to him, the process was repeated to be sure and the result still came back as a stolen phone.

Wemimo said the officials adjusted their language to “missing”. They told the couple the device was flagged as missing.

Nonetheless, the officials allegedly told them that the phone had zero swap value and they had to leave quietly.

Wemimo said he told his wife they were able to leave quietly without the store calling the police because there was no policy in place regarding the situation.

He said that, otherwise, the staff would have been compelled to call the cops on them. According to him, they would have had to do a lot of explaining to get off.

Wemimo lamented that many Nigerians liked to cut corners for unhealthy gains, believing they were doing good business.

He called on Nigerians to transact business with integrity, which he said had higher value than illicit gains
