A prison officer, Megan Breen, 23, has admitted to having an amorous relationship with a prisoner while working at two prisons in South Wales, United Kingdom.

Breen pleaded guilty to the accusation after first insisting that she did not have an inappropriate relationship with the inmate.

In a turnaround, she admitted a three-month “inappropriate relationship” with the inmate between February and May 2022.

She was one of the officers managing the inmates for  HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed, both in Gwent.

A second accusation of illegally accessing a computer before a Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court has been dropped.

In the charge, Breen was accused of abusing the public’s trust by having a relationship with an inmate, a misconduct defined clearly in the rules book they all subscribed to.

Breen has now by released on bail pending sentencing next month. The court has hinted that she may spend some time behind bars.

HMP Usk falls into the Category C prisons and accommodates about 280 inmates.

It would be recalled that a probation officer was recently imprisoned for keeping an amorous relationship with a convicted burglar at HMP Preston in Lancashire.

Prison Officer, Leonie Wilkinson, 27, found out her old flame, Gary Hampson, 26, was one of the prisoners under her care.

They had known each other as teenagers and went on to have a romantic relationship.

Meeting again, Wilkinson resumed where they left off when she got employment in the prison.

However, their relationship was reportedly purely virtual and never physical. They exchanged dozens of phone calls and explicit messages.

There were other cases of a prison officer having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate reported in recent times. In one such case, the officer had sex with an inmate more than 40 times. Read more here.
