The Lagos State Government has warned homeowners sinking boreholes in the Lekki area of the state about the danger of drinking ‘shit water’.
The warning was given by the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, during a recent stakeholders meeting.
Adegbite said the water table had been contaminated by the untreated water seeping into the underground water.
He said this has rendered borehole water unsafe across Lekki.
Frankly speaking, he said all the residents who had sunk boreholes within the Lekki axis were “probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.”
He called for urgent installation of wastewater treatment plants in the area to sanitise the water they consume to avert disease outbreaks.
Adegbite said the government was committed to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens in all its ramifications.
He said plans were ongoing for the improvement of water supply and drainage infrastructure across the state.
