Man rejected as too old at 27 by Ghanaian army graduates as US Airman at 42
Netizens blast African countries for aiding brain drain

A man, Mawuli Bruce Spetua, is being showcased as an example of how African countries frustrate their citizens and force them to seek self-actualisation in the West.
Spetua was reportedly rejected as too old by the Ghana Armed Forces when he tried to enlist after his university degree.
He later relocated to America, where he has now just graduated as an Airman with first class.
A Ghanaian journalist, Fred Duhoe, who claimed to be his personal friend, shared the news on his Facebook page.
He highlighted how different systems help individuals to realise their dreams, using the story of Spetua as a reference.
According to him, Mawuli Bruce Spetua, had a dream of becoming a soldier and applied for the Army Officers’ course in Ghana in 2010.
By then, he had completed his degree from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
His application was reportedly rejected on the grounds that he had exceeded the age cut-off.
According to Duhoe, his friend resorted to taking up an appointment as a secondary school teacher in Ho, Ghana.
Fortune later smiled on him when a friend of his assisted him in processing his travel to the United States of America.
After he landed in America, Spetua reignited his passion for becoming a member of the armed forces and applied for enrollment.
He was accepted into the programme and on July 27, 2025, he formally became a US airman.
The happy Ghanaian took to his Facebook page to celebrate the milestone in his life. He gave glory to God and a certain Empress Enyonam Akorfa Amuzu for assisting him to realise his dream.
“I am forever grateful” he wrote.
Spetua’s Facebook page is filled with photos and videos of his activities in the US Air Force.
His story has sparked massive interest on social media, with many criticising African countries for putting obstacles in the path of their citizens to greatness.
