
The body of a promising photojournalist, Mr. Ayobami Aiyepeku, believed to have been killed by his friend, has been recovered, according to the police.
The police also confirmed the death of Aiyepeku’s suspected killer, Jacob Adebayo Pelumi.
The suspect, an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Services, reportedly drank an insecticide after locking himself in a hotel room.
Prior to this, a manhunt had been declared for him after it emerged was last seen with the deceased on Tuesday.
He was believed to have killed him around 8:30 pm on 22 July in an office near the Government House, Government Reserved Area, Lokoja.
It is not clear what transpired between the two of them before the tragic incident.
Pelumi reportedly put his friend in a deep freezer and later dumped him in a bush
Police spokesperson, Mr Ovye-Aya said the late journalist’s body was found on Sunday evening around the WAEC office, in the area called Crusher Zone 8, Lokoja, Kogi State.
Residents of the area were curious about a strong odour coming from the nearby bush and decided to investigate it.
It was in the process that they discovered the body and alerted the authorities.
The police are now calling for any information that will help them to unravel the mystery
The father of the deceased, Chief James Aiyepeku, described his son as a kind and gentle person who rarely bickered with anyone.
He called on the police to assist the family to understand what really happened before Ayobami’s life was cut short.
The police in Kogi announced that they had recovered the Toyota Hilux van that the suspect used to convey Ayobami.
They also said they had recovered the deep freezer that the deceased was put in.
The case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
