Students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, are currently trying to grapple with the mysterious death of their colleague, a final-year student named Emem Okon Jimmy.
Emem, a student of Journalism and Media Studies, allegedly slept in her room on Thursday, July 17, 2025, but never woke up.
Lodge mates and the caretaker of the property were worried when Emem did not come out of her room on Friday, July 18.
They thought she was taking a rest, but when she failed to come out by evening, they raised the alarm.
By 10 pm, they climbed onto the roof to access her room from there, since she locked herself inside.
That was when they found her lying on the bed, face down.
Blood was noticed trickling into the bedsheet from her nostrils, suggesting she might have suffered a medical emergency, without anyone noticing.
Fellow students sharing the lodge with her said she was full of life the previous day and had dinner with some of them in the lodge before going to bed.
Emem’s brother was reportedly contacted by the caretaker, using the contact details she put in her records.
Sources said the brother travelled from Uyo to Ikot Ekpene and retrieved the body to deposit at a mortuary.
A candlelight procession was held in honour of the departed student at her department. The head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Dr. Inemesit Umoren, consoled the colleagues left behind by Emem.
He urged them to prioritise regular medical checkups while managing their academic responsibilities.
