The University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State, has explained why a female student of Computer Science at the institution, Rosemary Uyiudo, was sent packing.
A letter addressed to the student, seen by Microsecondnews, detailed the offences of the student.
The memo signed by the institution’s Acting Registrar, Mr. Chinedu Nnatuanya, accused Uyiudo of sharing sexually explicit materials (nude images) and “personal videos where you were seen with a male acquaintance (Gabby) doing acts contrary to the core values of the University”.
University on the Niger said she was consequently placed on suspension for one academic session, effective from 15th July, 2025.
The university said the suspension was to serve as a disciplinary measure against such actions and to give Uyiudo an opportunity for sober reflection.
The institution forbade her to attend lectures, sit for an examination or participate in any activity within the school premises.
University on the Niger ordered Uyiudo to vacate her hostel immediately after returning any property belonging to the institution in her custody.
The school requested her to apply for readmittance to the institution upon completion of her suspension.
Her readmittance will then be considered by the University Management.
Uyiudo’s friends, however, countered the position of the institution. They alleged that the suspended student had complained to the institution that she was being blackmailed by someone who was in possession of her nudes.
They claimed that she decided to approach the institution when she got tired of paying the blackmailer for the nudes.
According to her friends who wished to remain anonymous, Uyiudo had spent some money trying to keep the nudes from leaking.
They alleged that her refusal to continue to pay the blackmailer was the reason the nudes were leaked by the ex-boyfriend.
They wondered why nothing was done to the blackmailer, and it was only Uyiudo who was punished.
As to the question of why the student did not vacate the premises of the institution, as she was directed by the management, her friends said she only asked to be allowed to stay overnight because it was late.
One claimed that it was raining, and Uyiudo pleaded with them to allow her father, who was already on his way, to arrive, but they refused.
It is not clear if Gabby, the male mentioned as Uyiudo’s sexual partner in the institution’s letter of suspension, is also a student of the institution.
The institution made no further reference to Gabby in the letter or any other publicly accessible communication.
Microsecondnews reported on Sunday that Uyiudo was manhandled by security men of the University in their bid to get her out of her hostel.
