A 200-level student of Kogi State University, Anyigba, has been detained by the police after a senior lecturer of the institution, identified as Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, died during intimacy with her in a hotel room.
The student of Social Studies Education (name withheld), who is aged 22, was lodged in the hotel by the lecturer, who is said to have a reputation for sleeping with female students.
According to SaharaReporters, the manager of the hotel called the Anyigba Police DPO to report the incident shortly after it happened on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The student had initially called the attention of the manager when he found that her lecturer was unresponsive after a round of intimacy in the hotel room.
The police arrived swiftly and rushed the man to a hospital, where doctors certified him dead.
Students reportedly described the late Dr Ibikunle as one of the most difficult of the lecturers in the school. They said he had a penchant for exploiting students who were afraid of failing his course.
He would allegedly sleep with them to award them marks.
The female student the lecturer was with at the time of his demise reportedly said the man drank multiple energy drinks before their sexual bout.
The Kogi State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP William Ovye Aya, told the publication that the female student had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The police said an autopsy had been conducted on the late lecturer, but the results were yet to be released.
They promised to prosecute the student if necessary after their investigations.
The late Dr Ibikunle was married with children.
Microsecondnews reported that two lovers died during intimacy in Ondo last year. The exact course of their death was not known at the time.
