Two ladies have been detained, pending prosecution for illegally dumping waste on the road in the Sangotedo area of Lagos.

The women were identified as Margaret Solomon, 29, and Onyia Elizabeth, 42. They were apprehended by LAWMA’s team,, charged with monitoring and apprehending illegal waste dumpers.

The team was on a night stakeout along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway when they sighted the ladies committing the offence.

LAWMA CEO Muyiwa Gbadegeshin said in a tweet on X on Thursday, July 17, that the suspects were unable to provide verifiable residential addresses.

According to him, the surveillance team has transferred the suspects to LAWMA’s legal team for prosecution.

Gbadegesin said the prosecution would proceed under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law (EMPL 2017).

He disclosed that video and photographic evidence were obtained to facilitate the prosecution of the ladies.

The LAWMA boss said every Lagos resident had a legal duty to properly dispose of their waste and maintain environmental hygiene.

He called on residents to sign up with approved waste operators and use LAWMA-certified bins.

Gbadegesin said failure to do this attracted arrests, fines up to ₦250,000 and imprisonment of up to three months.
