A Nigerian academic, Yakubu Wudil, has tongue-lashed President Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri after the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
Microsecondnews recalls that President Tinubu announced during an extended version of the Federal Executive Council held in honour of the late Buhari yesterday, July 17, that UNIMAID would now be called Muhammadu Buhari University.
Commenting on the development, Wudil, an Assistant Professor of Renewable Energy, said Tinubu should have renamed the Federal University of Transportation Daura instead of UNIMAID.
The academic argued that institutions like UNIMAID had built their names over the years, and the name had become an identity and a badge of honour.
He said this should not be trifled with.
“How would you feel if Harvard were renamed to Barack Obama University?” the academic asked rhetorically.

“President Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. I believe this was done in good faith.
However, I wish he had chosen to rename the Federal University of Transportation in Daura instead. Unimaid already has an established identity and brand.
I’ve mentioned it several times that established institutions carry their names as a badge of honour. How would you feel if Harvard were renamed to Barack Obama University?”
His tweets have generated mixed reactions, with some supporting him while others opposing him.
